Roman soldiers slept here, noble knights held court here, and in the late 18C the 3rd Marquis of Bute, reported at the time to be  the wealthiest man in the world transformed the castle into a romantic Victorian fantasy. Architect William Burgess created the lavish and opulent interiors ; each breathtaking room rich with murals, stained glass and gilding.
