Lower Hearson Cottages is more than just a place to stay; it’s where memories are made. Owners Anna, Tim, and Cameron fell in love with its charm the moment they first saw it and are passionate about sharing this special place with others. Living on site, they’re always on hand, whether it’s to recommend the best local pub, share stories about the history of the cottages, or help children meet the farm animals for the first time.

The 2 acres of garden, 5 acre paddock and 7 acre woodland offers space for everyone to relax, connect, and enjoy the little things that make a holiday special. Animal lovers, young and old, find joy in hands-on experiences with our friendly sheep, chickens and pigs. For some children, it’s their first opportunity to get close to animals, sparking a newfound confidence and love for the natural world. Here, childhood is celebrated – whether it’s learning to swim in the outdoor pool or spending an afternoon hunting for minibeasts

Families often spend time in the garden for an alfresco dinner or spread out a picnic blanket while the children play nearby. For those who love a bit of competition, the games room provides hours of fun with table football, table tennis, and toys for younger guests. For quieter moments, find a peaceful corner under the shade of mature trees or take a walk through our wild woodland. Evenings at Lower Hearson are equally enjoyable. Picture yourself sitting outside with a glass of wine, the gentle hoot of owls in the background, and bats gracefully darting across the twilight sky.

This is our largest cottage, sleeping 7 across 3 bedrooms. The good sized double bedroom upstairs has a velux window affording views of the original, still unconverted, 18th Century Shippon. In the Summer, you can watch the swallows swoop and dive into the barn as they return to their nests. Across the hall is the triple room with three single beds. There is also a family bathroom. The third bedroom is a practical ground floor twin room with ensuite.

The downstairs has ample living space for a group of 7 to enjoy a holiday without feeling crowded. The comfortable living room with electric log-effect fire allows the family to relax together and the connected kitchen is light and practical. The Cottage is well equipped with a washer/dryer, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, electric oven and microwave.

A very popular feature of this cottage is the sunroom with French doors. This is a lovely way to maximise the connection between the practical indoor spaces and the private raised patio area that is for the exclusive use of our Shippon guests.

There is also a dining and family room at the back of the property which provides ample space for the whole family to sit together for an evening meal or gather for a special occasion. The corner sofa in the family area is a comfortable place to relax and watch a DVD.

As with all our cottages, guests can enjoy use of the gardens, swimming pool (last week of May to September), games room and join us for animal experiences.

Perfect for families or couples, this historic property—believed to be 400 years old—was originally a stone barn and remains a part of North Devon’s rich farming heritage. Ongoing renovations, like the lime-pointed kitchen wall, honor its traditional roots while offering modern comforts.

Step into the open-plan kitchen and dining area, where a well-equipped kitchen includes a dishwasher, washer/dryer, and separate fridge and freezer. A dining table seats 4, with a highchair available on request. The living room features a TV (with Roku), comfortable seating for everyone, and an electric log-effect fire for cosy evenings. There is a small desk for working remotely using the free fast Starlink Wi-Fi.

Upstairs, the spacious double bedroom has room for a free travel cot (on request), while the twin bedroom is ideal for children. The family bathroom includes a shower over the bath.

Upstairs, the master double bedroom has room for a travel cot (available free on request), while the twin room is perfect for children or extra guests. Thoughtfully designed for families, the cottage offers a highchair on request, as well as children’s crockery and cutlery to make mealtimes stress-free.

Travel West along the M5 heading for Devon. Leave the M5 at Junction 27 onto the A361 towards Tiverton.

Via Bishops Tawton

Follow this road past Tiverton for 34 miles until approaching Barnstaple, branch left at the roundabout on the A361 signposted for Bideford.

After one mile, turn left at the roundabout signposted Bishops Tawton onto the A377. Continue through the village of Bishops Tawton.

Take the left turn opposite the garage up the hill signed Cobbaton/Chittlehampton.

After approximately 2 miles at the sharp right hand bend take the left turn down the lane signed Hannaford.

Continue straight over the crossroads and take the second right turn signed Middle and Lower Hearson.

After driving past Middle Hearson and Barn Cottage, you will find us at the bottom of the drive.
