Regardless of your leisure interests - whether you want to be active or just enjoy the open space - Farm Stay holiday cottages and B&Bs provide a welcome respite at the end of a long day!
The highest and least populated part of Cornwall, it's rugged remote beauty has long been used as a backdrop for TV, such as Poldark and Jamaica Inn - Cornwall's most famous smuggler inn, made famous by the Daphne De Maurier book.
Bodmin Moor is rich in ancient history with a wealth of Neolithic and Bronze Age remains as well as myths and legends, such as the Beast of Bodmin Moor.
The Moor is dominated by dramatic granite tors which tower over the sweeping expanses of open heather covered moorland. Marshes and bogs on the high moor drain into shallow moorland valleys before the rivers cross onto softer shales around the Moor and carve themselves deep river valleys, providing shelter for rich, damp oak woodland.
Like much of Cornwall, Bodmin Moor was fairly heavily mined during the nineteenth century. Ruins of disused grantie quarries and tin and copper mines litter the landscape, including the Phoenix United mine in Minions, where there is a visitor's centre.
Among the livestock you will see on Bodmin Moor are Ponies, Sheep and Cattle. There are thought to be over 1000 untamed moorland ponies fending for themselves.
There are plenty of opportunities to try your hand at pony riding at one of the many riding schools in the area. Viewing the beauty of Bodmin Moor on horseback is a treat that will create lasting memories.
Dotted around the beautiful countryside of Bodmin Moor, you'll find small farm shops selling unique local produce as well as tearooms or cosy, friendly pubs serving local ales and food specialities sourced from nearby, where you can refuel before returning to your quality countryside accommodation. The moorland isn't just a place for serious hikers - there are family friendly walks too - like the marked trails at Cardinham Woods which also make good cycling routes., as does the traffic free Sibleyback lake based on the edge of the moors.
