National Trust - Places to Visit in Dorset

Brownsea Isalnd  is the largest of the islands in Poole Harbour. Much of the island is open to the public and includes areas of woodland and heath with a wide variety of wildlife. 
Max Gate  is the former home of Thomas Hardy and is located on the outskirts of Dorchester. It was designed and built by Thomas Hardy for his own use in 1885 and he lived there until his death in 1928.

Hardy's Cottage in Higher Bockhampton, is a small cob and thatch building that is the birthplace of the English author Thomas Hardy. He was born there in 1840 and lived in the cottage until he was aged 34—during which time he wrote the novels Under the Greenwood Tree (1872) and Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) —when he left home to be married to Emma Gifford.

Clouds Hill  is an isolated cottage near Wareham. It is the former home of T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") and is now run as a writer's home museum


Kingston Lacy is a country house and estate near Wimborne Minster. It was for many years the family seat of the Bankes family who lived nearby at Corfe Castle until its destruction in the English Civil War after its incumbent owners, Sir John Bankes and Dame Mary, had remained loyal to Charles I.
