East Yorkshire’s Wild Wolds

The understated and gentle rolling of the Yorkshire Wolds belies secluded valleys home to several species of orchids and more than 30 species of butterflies.

Barn owls hunt low over the grasslands and verges, and in the skies above, the majestic red kite is now a frequent sight with its distinctive forked tail. Large numbers of kites can gather at Nunburnholme in the winter.

Spring sees brown hares ‘boxing’ in the fields or running the tractor lines at over 40mph – look out for their large, pert and black-tipped ears.

Chalk and limestone grasslands are home some of the county’s most delightful wildflower meadows, with bee orchids joined by pyramidal, common spotted and purple orchids as summer approaches. Butterflies include the marbled white, ringlet and common blue.

The same chalk allows for wonderful crystal-clear streams, where lamprey are joined by kingfishers and occasional water voles.
