East Yorkshire’s Wonderful Wetlands

The Humber Estuary’s reedbeds play host to some of Britain’s most sought after species, whilst wetlands nestling within the Yorkshire Wolds have plenty to offer the patient wildlife-watcher.

Explore Blacktoft Sands for bitterns, bearded tits and marsh harriers – and the playful Konik ponies – or North Cave Wetlands west of Hull for close-up views of avocets in spring and summer, with the occasional visit from hairy Highland cattle too! Both sites welcome an array of birds passing through on migration, and winter refuges find the ‘top guns’ like peregrines, merlin, harriers and even kites dropping in for a meal.


Tophill Low between Driffield and Beverley boasts regular otter sightings from their dedicated hide (with infra-red camera), with kingfishers and water voles an impressive supporting cast. Winter finds barn owls a regular feature, and the vast reservoirs holds thousands of ducks in their finest colourful attire. A new welcome centre opened in 2016.
